"Between life and death there is a library, and within that library, the shelves go on forever. Every book provides a chance to try another life you could have lived. To see how things would be if you had made other choices . . . Would you have done anything different, if you had the chance to undo your regrets?"
A dazzling novel about all the choices that go into a life well lived, from the internationally bestselling author of Reasons to Stay Alive and How To Stop Time.
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?
In The Midnight Library, Matt Haig's enchanting new novel, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place.
I loved this book! Great concept and creatively written. Makes you really think!
Loved this book, so creative!
Interesting premise. Not the best writing style, and a bit cheesy. However, kept my attention. Worth a read if you’re looking for something distracting and like the idea of the novel.
Creative tale about life. Short and easy read, also easily holds your attention.
I really enjoyed the book! It was an easy read. It makes you think all aspects into your own life.
This book was something I needed at this point in my life. Other reviews said it was uplifting and I suppose that’s true, but mainly it’s eye-opening. It’s a reminder that the life you’re living is also skewed by the life of yesterday- you’re obsessing over. So, stop obsessing over what’s done if you can. Presence. Being present matters.
I finished this in two days! I loved this book! Highly recommend. It makes you think about life and “mistake” and “regrets” in a simple and beautiful way. 10/10
Wow...just, wow! I am deeply touched by this book. It was a random selection but I now see God aligned it.
The Midnight Library read as easy as a conversation. I enjoyed the premise although deeper characters would have been an improvement. They had a “one dimensional” sort of feel to them. Well written and I’m looking forward to reading more from Mr. Haig.
This is a feel good book and just what I needed right now. It is hopeful. This book could be made into a movie easily.
I enjoyed this book. There were some noteworthy paragraphs and sentences I could apply to my life Almost something you could frame and Put on the wall. I think at times applying to all of us. Thought provoking story, maybe it’s just my present time Of life. I enjoyed the perspective.
Such a great read! I got consumed in it & it makes you think of life in a different life!
I really liked this book! It put life into perspective for me. Very inspiring.
I used to enjoy reading so much but it has been YEARS since I last picked up a book. I’ve recently gone threw a bout of depression, and just last week during one of my “quiet” moments I felt the need to try to start again. I spent an hour searching for the perfect book, one that I hoped we keep my interest, and this without a doubt hit it out of the park. It makes you really think about your life, and puts it into a perception that you’ve probably never seen it in before. 10/10, 5 stars, I’m recommending to everyone.
This book catches you from the start. It gets emotionally real right away. You’re immediately at the point when you think— Oh this might be too deep and too sad, but the funny and witty character it grabs you. I loved this unexpected journey.
This book echoed so many familiar feelings inside of me. It gave me so much hope and I just enjoyed it so much.
Starts out a little predictable but ends with a good message—-Live in the moment.
Great read, especially if feeling down or unsure about the direction you chose in life. You are exactly where you are supposed to be.
Such a well done alternate universe/infinite possibilities novel. It is chock-full of dilemmas and resolutions. I loved it.
Wow incredible book. I was skeptical from the description, but ultimately decided to try it and it’s now one of my favorite books!
I loved this book. It is so refreshingly different. I have seen criticisms that say anyone could have written it and that it’s predictable. I so disagree. The whole premise of the book is that no one is just anyone. And predictability can be the best thing life has to offer. This book is not only entertaining but chock full of “life-isms” that are nothing short of profound. I found myself so drawn to this book just to find out where Nora ends up next. I have kind of become a “Nora” due to the pandemic and this book helped take me out if that for a time. This is a story written by a true storyteller. Matt Haig has spent some serious time thinking of the possibilities and all I can say is “wow”.
This book is amazing. I couldn’t put it down and managed to finish it in 3 days. A great read about life and the many lessons and choices we have.
Absolutely Uplifting! I needed this ♥️
very exciting premise with a strong beginning but everything that followed was poorly executed — juvenile writing style, plot gets repetitive, the “lessons” are obvious
One of the best books I’ve ever read.
This book is very good! I am going to read it again! It tackles that age-old question- “What if I had made different decisions in my life?!” Highly recommend!
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. It has changed the way I look at life in a wonderful way. Uplifting, adventurous, real and fun.
My top recommendation for a feel good read in a hard time, the Midnight Library will surely change your perspective and make you want to, “do better”
great read for when you’re feeling a little lost, a little hopeless, and contemplating all of your life choices. brings you back to reality when you feel as far away from life as you can get, and reminds you that each day holds immense potential.
The true fiction in this novel is that clinical depression can be overcome through a near death experience.
Very enjoyable derivative of “It’s a Wonderful Life” (which is derivative of “A Christmas Carol”).
Very thought provoking! I very much enjoyed this book
Anyone could have written this. Skip it.
Juvenile. Poorly written. Meh. Phony philosophy. Stay away.
Relatable and inspiring. Deals with life’s questions we all share at some point and leaves you with a renewed sense of peace and excitement. “Don’t have to understand life - just live it”
Our lives are utter chaos right now (and, frankly, always). This book makes them make sense.
“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”
Fantastic writing that hooked me from the beginning and I couldn’t put down! The infinite possibilities absolutely fascinated me
Loved every single page. Perfect book to help you remember what is important in these trying times!
Liked the creative look into the possibility of parallel universes. We all ask ourselves the question “what if...?”
Love love love this book!! It was our book of the month for Book Club and I could not put it down. I love the twists and turns, on top of the deep life lessons it teaches along the way. It’s brilliant. Simply brilliant.
This book provided a very real perspective for whether one is struggling with where they are in their lives or not.
A solidly entertaining book. It does begin to feel a bit repetitive, but it’s worth it.
I am reading it again.
This was by far the best book I have read a very long time. I am a different person because of my decision to read this amazing story.
Just makes you stop and reflect; have gratitude and perspective. Thoughtful and thought provoking. Loved it. Thank you🙏🏼
Absolutely beautiful. Uplifting, profound, and heartfelt. A stunning portrait of what it’s like to live with mental illness and fall into the depths of despair—and to climb out of them too. I am alive, indeed!
A true masterpiece that gets the mind, body, and soul to drift into your own personal midnight library. I laughed, smiled, worried, and cried through out the entire book. In a way this book popped up on me at the start of a rough season in my life and not only had me think of the many possibilities of my own midnight library but brought me a bit of peace in a frustrating season, I pray comes to an end soon...... “you don’t have to understand life, you just have to live it” I AM ALIVE
Loved this story about the struggle of living your own life as is through Nora. The wanting more or different holds us all back. Easy read with lots of connection.
