#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Over one million copies sold! From the Academy Award®–winning actor, an unconventional memoir filled with raucous stories, outlaw wisdom, and lessons learned the hard way about living with greater satisfaction
“Unflinchingly honest and remarkably candid, Matthew McConaughey’s book invites us to grapple with the lessons of his life as he did—and to see that the point was never to win, but to understand.”—Mark Manson, author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me.
Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries. I found stories I experienced, lessons I learned and forgot, poems, prayers, prescriptions, beliefs about what matters, some great photographs, and a whole bunch of bumper stickers. I found a reliable theme, an approach to living that gave me more satisfaction, at the time, and still: If you know how, and when, to deal with life’s challenges—how to get relative with the inevitable—you can enjoy a state of success I call “catching greenlights.”
So I took a one-way ticket to the desert and wrote this book: an album, a record, a story of my life so far. This is fifty years of my sights and seens, felts and figured-outs, cools and shamefuls. Graces, truths, and beauties of brutality. Getting away withs, getting caughts, and getting wets while trying to dance between the raindrops.
Hopefully, it’s medicine that tastes good, a couple of aspirin instead of the infirmary, a spaceship to Mars without needing your pilot’s license, going to church without having to be born again, and laughing through the tears.
It’s a love letter. To life.
It’s also a guide to catching more greenlights—and to realizing that the yellows and reds eventually turn green too.
If you want a good laugh and to feel inspired read this book you wont regret it!!!! I don’t see how anyone would have anything negative to say about this book. If you do... you missed the point and have no sense of humor.
A mentor of cool, unapologetic truth and genuine care for what ties us all together, love
It was a fun read...it kept my interest from the start...quite a guy....not sure what I expected but it exceeded my expectations...would encourage him to “get into” politics...he’d help lots of people.
This book made me revere Matthew McConaughey as a free thinker with a refreshingly positive outlook on life. I think it is a must read for many young adults who look to have a more positive outlook and turning their metaphorical “red lights” into “greenlights”
A fantastic tell-all of McConaughey’s life story and all his redlights, yellowlights, greenlights, and how he reacted to each situation. Reading this book will help you turn the redlights and yellowlights from your past into greenlights, and you’ll gain new perspective on life.
I am not a huge audio book fan as I usually have a clear “voice” in my head, but after hearing Mr. McConaughey interviewed I was happy to give it a try! It is such a raw, honest, funny and personal story, I actually can’t imagine having not hear him read it! Well done!
Inspiring, relatable, nothing shy of pure honesty, vulnerability, and the beauty of living life.
I laughed. I awed. I oh’d. I recommended this book over and over. It felt like an escape and like home.
Inspirational! What a life! A wise and talented soul indeed!
I have read a lot of books and listened to quite a few audiobooks; and, Greenlights is by far the best. The insight into Matthew McConaughey’s life was written (and read) so well it was as if you were standing by his side as these events were happening. This is a story, not of an actor trying to create a legacy, but of an actor recording a legacy he created on paper. His prescribes and poems are not just an enjoyable interlude from his story, but tidbits of wisdom that will stick with you forever. This is a book I will read a year from now for inspiration on whatever I am working on by then. “Keep on Living!”
One of my favorites
Thought this would be a good read but just another way to pat himself on the back.
Alright alright alright. Pretty good, pretty weird.. I wish he went into detail more about things he glazed over. Sometimes rambled on and on and found myself skimming his journal writings. It is MM though. Good read. Wild yet introspective dude.
Getting to know someone, on a different level then watching their movies and scrolling on Instagram. Is different then hearing them talk about their family and their life style. I would totally recommend this book
This man is the perfect mix of manly man and hippie, if Joe Rogan and John Muir had a baby it would be Mathew. From his tales to his lessons I thing anyone could take from this book.
From the first page you can hear McConaughey’s voice
Wonderfully written and so enjoyable to read.
I absolutely loved this book!! I laughed I cried I feel inspired !!! Great read!!!
It kept me glued to the pages. An easy read, great stories.
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time!
Overall, happy I took the time to read it. Very personal, relatable, stoic. Would love to reread later in life and reflect once again on its meaning. I’ve already recommended to others. Must read!
Love it!!! Great read!
Love it! One of my favorite actors, I’m glad I read your book.
It was McConaughey’s open story ...... sharing all his glories and blemishes. We all experience the same in life, but don’t always admit to them and hence fail to learn from them. Very encouraging and interesting read.
An absolutely amazing read, Matthew speaks from such a humble and truthful place. 10/10 would recommend.
Fun read that added depth to my two dimensional understanding of who Matthew is. As a 50 year old father of four I appreciate the urge to be reflective at this stage of life. To check my path. To adjust if need be. To move forward.
A wonderful memoir with honest, down to earth observations about life.
An experienced C “Unbelievable” 👍👍👍
Amazing storyteller! Provides a different point of view to life and gives the reader insight into the life of this man. Think so much more of Mathew after this read. Best of luck to him and his family.
His story is amazing, he bears his soul. It’s just a very honest inside look into who MM really is! And he’s beautiful. Great read! Highly recommend.
Truly an inspiring story!
Very inspirational and funny. Must read. Just what I needed after a rough year,
I’m not a reader. I’ve been working from home for almost a year now and decided that my average 8 hour a day screen time on my iPhone was becoming a bit ridiculous. I read the front matter and finished this book in a day and half. I feel inspired and rejuvenated after reading this. Thank you, Matthew, for sharing your life with me and reminding me to just keep L I V I N.
I find myself as a casual reader, sometimes finding it difficult to be captivated by a story but between the stories and Mathew’s incredible commentary I couldn’t put this book down! I recommend this book to anyone but strongly suggest the audiobook at the same time.
His story came at a perfect time in my life. A lot of relevant life lessons even for an average joe like myself. Great read!
I enjoyed everything about “Greenlights”. The unfiltered, brutal honesty of this book, is now after reading Greenlights is how I imagine Mr. McConaughey in true life....brutal honesty. I love it. Life lessons in all he’s done. Mr. McConaughey is a tough man, much kudos to him no doubt; but also to his parents! This world needs more Mr. McConaugheys! He walks the walk. Not afraid to throw a punch or take a punch.
Great book. Nice over view of Mathews life. I would say that he gives any really deep emotion but provides a since of security that life goes on. To make the best of it and to try and make the best of it. Thank you for the personal view point. Writing takes courage. Much respect.
A book we can all connect with for the same reasons, for different reasons, for any reason. It is funny, deep, surprising, emotional, captivating, and a little melancholic. It is a love letter to life and if it does one thing it is highlight it’s beauty (life’s). Please purchase it. It is better than all his rom coms combined (they’re good but this is better) and a smoother read than one of his Lincoln cars.
As a woman quickly approaching my 40’s and stuck between what life expects of me and what I truly desire... it’s time to re-brand myself. Truly what I needed. God bless and thank you.
I must say that I never gave Matthew much thought. I’m a fan of his now after reading his book.
Truly enjoyed getting to know Matthew and traveling through his life with him, so far. I never knew how down to earth and real he is. This book makes me want to know him more. Failure to Launch is one of my favorite movies.
I learned a lot from reading this book “GreenLight”
Una historia increíble que inspira a buscar lo mejor de cada uno.
Very raw, and objective view to living life to its fullest.
Couldn’t put it down, thoroughly enjoyed this book! McConaughey is fascinating from start to finish.
I absolutely could not believe how good this book is! To discover the many life experiences and wisdom that this man has shared with everyone is truly amazing. A must read! I highly recommend this books to everyone who enjoys autobiographies/memoirs or just enjoy reading a great book. Whether you’re a fan of his or not you will be blown away. Five stars from this reader!
Accidentally purchased this instead of the audiobook, first time using this app so I wrongly assumed it included the audiobook. Didn’t see anywhere that I could email to try and return it and purchase the audiobook instead, so leaving a review hoping someone reaches out. I am constantly driving so I do not have time to read the book, hoping the publisher or someone else reaches out so that I can return this and purchase the audiobook!
I’ve always like Matthew’s films and personality that I’ve seen. I particularly enjoyed his Oscar speech. It seemed real, authentic. This book, utilizes 35 years of his personal journaling, gives a glimpse into why he is the way he is. But there are experiences, thoughts, practices I can apply to my own life. I may not be able to wrestle an African tribesman, but I can learn to say yes to challenges that scare me. A great read.
Just a great story
